In the world of creative strategy, we are taught to look for inspiration in galleries, in data sets, or in the quiet of a closed office. But the Nonprofit Imagineer knows a secret: the most profound insights often arrive when you are tired, frustrated, and stuck in a place you never intended to be.
In 1971, Bill Backer found himself in exactly that position. A heavy fog had grounded his flight to London, forcing an emergency landing in Shannon, Ireland. He was surrounded by irate travelers who were miles away from their destinations.
But the next morning, as he sat in the crowded airport café, he saw something that would change marketing history. He saw the very people who had been screaming at gate agents the night before now sitting together, laughing over bottles of Coca-Cola. He realized that a simple beverage wasn’t just a product; it was a “social lubricant” that provided a moment of harmony in a chaotic world. On a napkin, he scribbled the line: “I’d like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company.”
Finding the Magic in the “Fog”
We often treat the “airport moments” of our nonprofit work—the delays, the crowded waiting rooms, the logistics of the “security line”—as obstacles to our mission. We think the real work happens when the plane is at 30,000 feet and the impact is soaring.
But if we only look at the clouds, we miss the café.
Inspiration is rarely found in the “perfect flight.” It is found in the “ground stop.” When our marketing feels noisy, when our fundraising feels like a slog, or when our membership feels transient, those are the moments to look closer. Like Backer, we have to ask: What is the shared thirst in this room right now?
The Imagineer’s Perspective
Imagineering isn’t just about building theme parks; it’s about intentional observation. It’s the ability to look at a mundane airport terminal and see a masterclass in human behavior.
The “Wait” is a Gift: In a world of instant gratification, the airport forces us to pause. In that pause, we can see who our supporters really are when the “status” of their daily lives is stripped away.
The Universal Language: Backer realized that everyone understands the need for a moment of peace. Your nonprofit’s mission is that same universal language. It is the “Coke” in the middle of a foggy terminal.
Tying the Journey Together
Over the course of this “Airport” series, we look at the airport as a metaphor for our organizations. We navigate wayfinding, surviving the security line, and building community at the gate.
But the final lesson is this: Don’t just look for the exit. The next time you find yourself in a metaphorical layover—whether it’s a stalled project or a difficult board meeting—stop and look around the “terminal.” There is a story being told in the frustration, a connection being made in the waiting, and a “song” being written on a napkin.
Our job as Nonprofit Imagineers is to find that harmony, buy the world a drink, and keep them company until the fog clears.
Spring Savings!
