Using Matrix Mapping to Keep your Nonprofit Creativity in Check

matrix mapping at nonprofit

Brainstorming is fun and can lead to some very creative ideas.  The problem is, not all creative ideas contribute to your mission or sustainability.  It can be easy to travel down paths that don’t help you achieve your organizational objectives, and can even end up harming you.

Take a look at this article to learn about Matrix Mapping.  As the article mentions,

The basic steps involved in creating a matrix map are:

      1. Identifying your core activities.
      2. Determining the impact that those activities have on your mission.
      3. Clarifying the profitability of those activities.
      4. Mapping the results of your assessment.

Since nonprofits are businesses that must remain solvent, next time you decide on a new creative idea to pursue, take a moment to do a quick matrix map.  Will that idea end up helping or hurting you financially? Will it take up more of your time than it’s worth?  Are there better ways to achieve the same goal? Are there other ways to be just as creative without sacrificing time and financial security?
